Event Organization

Bike to Work Day is organized at the regional level by Commuter Connections and the Washington Area Bicyclist Association (WABA).  Event planning occurs through the Bike to Work Day Steering Committee which meets at the Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments (COG) in Washington, D.C. from September to May.

For more than 50 years, COG, has helped develop solutions to issues of regional importance. COG is an independent, nonprofit 501 c(3) association comprised of elected officials from 22 local governments, members of the Maryland and Virginia legislatures, and members of the U.S. Congress.

Commuter Connections is a program of the National Capital Region Transportation Planning Board at COG. Commuter Connections promotes bicycling to work, ridesharing and other alternatives to drive alone commuting, and provides ridematching for carpools and vanpools and offers the free Guaranteed Ride Home program (available to bicycle commuters). Commuter Connections is funded by the District of Columbia, Maryland, Virginia, and U.S. Departments of Transportation.
The mission of WABA is to create a healthy, more livable region by promoting bicycling for fun, fitness, and affordable transportation; advocating for better bicycling conditions and transportation choices for a healthier environment, and educating children, adults, and motorists about safe bicycling. WABA is a 501 c(3) non-profit organization.
At the local pit stop level, Bike to Work Day is hosted by a variety of organizations including local municipalities, city and county governments,  non profit entities, private-sector companies, federal govenment agencies, U.S. military, Business Improvement Districts, and even private citizen volunteers.   They all have one common goal for this event; to increase awareness and participation in bicycling as a method of transporation to work instead of driving alone.

Each year a Bike to Work Day Proclamation takes place at the Transportation Planning Board meeting held at the Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments.
