Bicycle Convoys

Listed below are Bike to Work Day commuter convoys. All bicyclists are welcome to join one of the free convoys and there’s no need to sign up for one. If you have questions about a specific convoy or it’s route, feel free to email the Convoy Leader directly. If you would like to lead a convoy and wish for it to be listed below, please email We will be accepting new convoys/changes to convoys until close of business on Friday, May 13th.

Each Bike to Work Day convoy is led by experienced bicycle commuters. Convoys start and end throughout the region and often include popular employment centers, pit stops, and trails. Check out the map below to see if there’s one traveling by your area or to your pit stop. Many of the Commuter Convoys end at the Freedom Plaza pit stop in downtown, D.C. If you would like to join a convoy, either meet the convoy group at the start location at the start time, or you can meet up with them along their route and join the group as they pedal on by, and of course you may leave the convoy anywhere along the route to suit your convenience.

All Bike to Work Day Convoys listed below are fully confirmed. Convoy leaders will leave promptly according to their start time, so please arrive at the start location for your convoy 10-15 minutes early.

#1 Falls Church, VA to Rosslyn Pit Stop to Freedom Plaza Pit Stop
Start Location: Providence Rec Center, 7525 Marc Dr, Falls Church, VA (Rte 50 just inside the Beltway)

More Info: The Convoy will leave at 6:30am, will pass by Route 50 and Cherry St around 6:45am, will pass by the W&OD and Custis intersection around 7:00am, will pass by Route 29 and Custis around 7:15am, and will arrive at the Rosslyn Pit Stop around 7:30am. Then for those continuing on to Downtown DC, the convoy will leave Rosslyn pit stop at 8am and will arrive at Freedom Plaza around 8:15am.

#2 Vienna to Freedom Plaza Pit Stop

More Info: This convoy will pass by the W&OD Trail and Lee Hwy intersection, the East Falls Church Metro Station, the Custis Trail at Fairfax Drive Ballston Connector and the Rosslyn pit stop, and participants can join the convoy at these locations too.

More Info: The convoy will pass by the Capital Crescent Trail at Mass Ave and the Georgetown Waterfront at the House of Sweden, and can pick up additional riders there.

#5 Greenbelt/College Park to Freedom Plaza Pit Stop

More Info: After starting in Greenbelt, the convoy will swing by the College Park pit stop to pick up additional riders. The convoy may include an “express” group that does not stop in College Park, and it will also likely include a group that spurs off toward Dupont on R Street from the Met Branch Trail. This convoy may make brief stops at Magruder Park in Hyattsville and/or the Edgewood pit stop on the Met Branch Trail. Check out an awesome video of the route from a prior year convoy here. Note that the convoy will depart from College Park pit stop promptly at 7:30am.

More Info: Meet at the Shady Grove Metro bike racks on the east side. This convoy swings by the Rockville Metro around 7:25am, and the Twinbrook Metro lot around 7:35am, and can pick up additional riders there.

#13  Frederick-Hood College to City Hall to the MARC Station/Frederick Pit Stop

More Info: The convoy will leave at 6:45am, head out to Rosemont Ave northbound, turn right on Lee Place to 7th St (by Fort Detrick), use the 7th Street bike lane down to East Street and ride East to 2nd (using new shared lanes on East) follow 2nd St to Court and stop at City Hall (7:00-7:05am). Head east on Church to East Street, turning right to the MARC Station on the left (7:15-7:20am). Ride is approximately 4.4 miles and utilizes bike lanes on 7th St. and shared lanes on East St.

#14 Shirlington to Carlyle (King Street Metro, USPTO)

More Info: This is a short ride for both commuters and those that just want a nice morning ride. We’ll take the scenic route from South Arlington to finish in Old Town Alexanderia. Feel free to take Metro (King Street) to work or elsewhere. We’ll start at the pit stop for Shirlington Village town center and go along Four Mile Run and then down the Mt. Vernon Trail along the Potomac River before turning back over to historic Alexandria’s Market Square which is also a pit stop. Those that want to, can continue to Carlyle (USPTO, Motley Fool) by King Street Metro. Very flat and great for novice riders. Though RSVP not required, it is encouraged for planning purposes. Total ride should be about 40 minutes.

#16 Rhode Island Avenue Metro Station to Shirlington via Freedom Plaza and Crystal City (*new convoy for 2016!)

More Info: Northeast Washington, DC to Shirlington, VA, via Freedom Plaza and Crystal City pit stops. We’ll stop at all three pit stops briefly to say hi and grab some goodies! We’ll depart Rhode Island Avenue Metro at 7am, depart Freedom Plaza around 7:30am, depart Crystal City around 8am, and arrive at Shirlington at 8:30am.

#17 Takoma Park to Freedom Plaza (*new convoy for 2016!)

More Info: We’ll plan to leave at 7:00am from Takoma Park and arrive downtown around 7:45am. This convoy follows a beginner-friendly 6.2 mile route from Old Takoma to downtown DC, via 3rd St, Kansas Ave & 11th St NW. While completely on-road, there are bike lanes or calm residential streets for almost the entire route. No stops are planned, though riders are welcome to join as we pass through Takoma DC (meet @ 3rd & Sheridan, ~7:10am), Petworth (meet in front of Library at Kansas & Georgia, ~7:20am) & Columbia Heights (meet by Trolley Turnaround Park, 11th & Monroe, ~7:25am).

#18 Columbia Pike/Penrose Square to Freedom Plaza (*new convoy for 2016!)

More Info: Route picks up the trail alongside Route 50, goes past the Netherlands Carillon, and then travels over Memorial Bridge and along the Reflecting Pool.

#19 Southwest Waterfront to Suitland Federal Center  (*new convoy for 2016!)
Start Location: SW Duck Pond, intersection of 6th St. SW and Eye St. SW

More Info: This convoy is new this year, but follows the same route as #9 (Meridian Hill). It will begin at the SW Duck Pond, travel down 6th St. SW and continue to Water St., then follow the same path as this convoy, from mile 3.4 on, ending at the Suitland Federal Center.

#20 Ellicott City to Gaithersburg  (*new convoy for 2016!)

More Info: The convoy will travel through Ellicott City, Columbia, Clarksville, Sandy Spring, Redland and on to Gaithersburg. For the most part, the roads are relatively low traffic secondary roads and residential streets. Some sidewalks will be used in high traffic areas near Gaithersburg. We can pick up riders along the way, email the leader so we know to look for you. This is about a 3 hr ride, with one 10 minute break halfway.

#21 Franconia-Springfield Metro Park at Walker Lane to Crystal City Water Park (*new convoy for 2016!)

More Info: This convoy will leave the Franconia-Springfield/Metro Park at Walker Lane Pit Stop at 6:45am, pass close to Alexandria – Carlyle Pit Stop, and end at the Crystal City Water Park Pit Stop. The route is about 12.5 miles, so please be able to ride that distance.
