Bicycle Convoys

All bicyclists are welcome to join one of the free Bike to Work Day convoys which are led by experienced volunteer bicycle commuters.  Although you need to register for Bike to Work Day, you don’t have to sign up to participate in a convoy. If you would like to join a convoy, simply meet the convoy group at the start location at the start time, or you can meet up with them anywhere along their route as they pedal on by; and of course you may leave the convoy anywhere along the route to suit your convenience. Convoys start and end throughout the region and often include popular employment centers, pit stops, and trails. Many of the Commuter Convoys end at the Freedom Plaza pit stop in downtown, D.C.

Listed below are Bike to Work Day commuter convoys from last year’s event, and as of now are unconfirmed for 2019.  If all goes well, these and more convoys will confirm for 2019.  If you would like to lead a convoy and wish for it to be listed below, please email WABA will be accepting new convoys or changes to convoys until close of business Friday, May 3, 2019.

#5 Chevy Chase to Freedom Plaza

Start Location: Chevy Chase Bus Turnaround

Start TIme: 7:00 AM

Convoy Leader: Steve Seelig ,

More Info: We are continuing a tradition of having a convoy on Bike to Work Day, Friday, May 18, 2018, of cycling downtown via Connecticut Avenue to Freedom Plaza. This year, it would be great if we can get a lot more participation from those who are actively seeking a protected bike lane along this route. Critical mass is important to help impress upon DDOT the urgent need for this infrastructure.

We have invited Ward 3 Councilmember Mary Cheh, who has been a great advocate for this improvement, so let’s show her that her constituents really want and need this improvement. This ride should be doable by most every cyclist. If you are daunted by heading back up the hill, consider that Metro permits you to take your bike home between 10am and 4pm, and that you can take the L2 bus from Farragut Square using the front bike rack to retrace our route back up Connecticut Avenue.

Here are the details:

  • 7am – Meet at the Bus Turnaround just South of Chevy Chase Circle
  • 7:10am – Start the ride down Connecticut
  • 7:15am – Stop briefly to pick up more riders at the Firehouse at Everett Street
  • 7:18am – Stop briefly to pick up more riders at the Intelsat Building at Van Ness
  • 7:20am – Stop briefly at the Cleveland Park Metro to pick up more riders
  • 7:25am – Stop for 5 minutes Wave at the Adams Morgan pit stop – grab some swag
  • 7:30am – Push on down Ontario Street and cut over to 17th Street toward Lafeyette Square
  • 7:40am or thereabouts – Arrive at Freedom Plaza
